No, IFS Cloud does not support a true single, global auto‑generated serial sequence that is shared across all manufactured parts without part context.
Manufacturing serial numbers are part-aware by design, because serials can actively drive manufacturing behavior.
In manufacturing, serial numbers are not just identifiers. They are used by the system for process logic, not only traceability.
1) Serial numbers can control structure selection
IFS Cloud supports Serial Effectivity, where:
- The serial number range determines which structure alternate is used for a shop order
- The system explicitly expects serials to be meaningful per part
2) Serial handling is tied to Inventory Part setup
Serial pointers, ranges, and effectivity are:
- Defined per inventory part
- Validated to ensure non‑overlapping serial ranges for that part.
A single global sequence would violate this model unless:
