Hello,

Is there a possibility to use 1 serial sequence for all manufactured serialized parts, auto generate in IFS cloud?

Kind regards.
Willem

Hi @12gWilleD,

No, IFS Cloud does not support a true single, global auto‑generated serial sequence that is shared across all manufactured parts without part context.

Manufacturing serial numbers are part-aware by design, because serials can actively drive manufacturing behavior.

In manufacturing, serial numbers are not just identifiers. They are used by the system for process logic, not only traceability.

1) Serial numbers can control structure selection

IFS Cloud supports Serial Effectivity, where:

  • The serial number range determines which structure alternate is used for a shop order
  • The system explicitly expects serials to be meaningful per part

2) Serial handling is tied to Inventory Part setup

Serial pointers, ranges, and effectivity are:

  • Defined per inventory part
  • Validated to ensure non‑overlapping serial ranges for that part.

A single global sequence would violate this model unless:

  • Serial effectivity is not used at all
  • And no downstream logic depends on serial ranges

✅ Supported pattern: One global format, part‑controlled generation

You can standardize on:

  • One serial format / pattern (e.g. numeric, prefix+sequence)
  • But the generation remains per part

This satisfies:

  • Global uniqueness (in practice)
  • Manufacturing rules
  • Serial effectivity safety

This aligns with how manufacturing serials are expected to behave in IFS Cloud.

Hope this clarifies your question. Let me know your feedback.

Thanks & Regards,

SN

Hi @12gWilleD,

When you say “manufactured serialized parts”, do you mean “serial numbers created during Shop Order manufacturing (inventory serials)?

Hello @SNIRLK ,

This is correct, when generate serial number reservations are excecuted.

Kind regards,

Willem
