Hi, we are currently consolidating our Part Catalogues within IFS Cloud implementation.

Our manufacturing processes produce detailed (machined & surface treated) parts which can be sales parts or be part of larger assemblies made from said detailed parts. Per legacy process & customer documentation, the name/number of the part changes only when a detailed part (DET_01) becomes part of an assembly (ASB_01).

They are all defined as manufactured parts, while any other components (consumables and non-machined/non-treated components) are defined as purchased parts.

For assemblies, we will have instances for MRP for both component as well as machined parts.

Considering an example assembly:
ASB_10 (Mnfg)

  • DET_09 (Mnfg)
    • COMP_01 (Purch)
    • COMP_02 (Purch)
  • COMP_03 (Purch)
  • COMP_04 (Purch)

Will it be helpful to apply multi-level tracking for such instances, so that planning for ASB_10 includes tracking of manufacturing of its detailed component DET_09 and all other (non-machined) components? How can this be applied to gain maximum clarity on materials availability as well as planning?

Thanks for all insights!

@A_Soph - hello, we have used IFS since 2002 and we are an automotive and medical device manufacturer. We have never used multi-level traking as it caused more trouble for ourselves with the system. We do use lot tracking for manufactured parts and order based for purchased parts and we are able to obtain full tracability still. I am curious as to how you are approaching the change in part number when a part isn’t sold but used in an assembly? I would have thought for control keeping the same part number but seeing demand from shop order and customer orders together would be an easier way to control. Sarah

Hi Sarah (@sholmes),

Thank you for your inputs. That’s quite helpful.

The differing part numbers pre & post assembly are part of the customer-led numbering hence always been adhered.

Thank you,

Anushka

Hi Anushka @A_Soph - so there is a structure with a shop order and routing that the creates the assembled part and that is when it changes part number - that makes sense and is how we would approach here. It would be interesting to see what industries use the multi level tracking and what the benefits are as they could have improved this functionality from when it was introduced. Sarah

That’s fair, Sarah.
At this point, understanding its applicability is key to determine if it’s a feature we should consider pouring effort into for our case.

@A_Soph Hi Anushka, I’ve been looking at the help pages for Shop Order Tracked Structure which is what multi level tracking requires, and every part needs to have it’s own serial number and be uniquely identified, we do not need this level of tracebility. It also lread it to be that unless you have it specified in the shop order tracked structure you can not over issue components. For yourselves it will depend on what level of control is wanted on the shop floor. We can trace which batch of parts, both manufactured and purchased go into every shop order and therfore go back serval product structures as a good few of our parts do and this level of tracebility covers our accreditation requirements. Hope that helps, Sarah

Multilevel tracking is defined on the Part page and requires the manufactured part to be serial and/or lot/batch tracked. Easiest I guess is to use an order based lot/tracking with one lot per order that is automatically created
