Subject: Custom Field with LOV and Free Text Entry

Hello,

We have a custom field (CF) based on a List of Values (LOV) reference.

This field is used in the Purchase Order form, specifically in the NO PART LINES section.

Currently, we are unable to insert any new values that are not already present in the reference table.

Is there a way to configure the CF so that users can:

  • Select a value from the existing list, or
  • Enter a new value that is not yet in the reference table?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,
Peter STEVENINCK

This is in the Purchase Order form added in the NO PART LINES:

But we cannot insert any new reference not existng in the reference table ?

is there any way to have a CF with the possibilité to

  • select a value out of an existing list
  • or insert a new value

Best regards

Hi @MCIPSTEV,

Unfortunately, it is not possible.

The purpose of using Reference Type LoV (List of Values) Custom Fields or Enumeration Type Custom Fields in IFS is to enforce data integrity and consistency. Allowing free-text or unrestricted input in such fields would indeed defeat the purpose of having controlled vocabularies or references, leading to fragmented and unreliable data.

Hi Steven,
I totally agree with Abdul!
From my (BI) perspective I understand your requirement of “quick input” but must say:

Anytime we (BI experts) cross “free text” we face problems.
First:       the ever growing amount/number of categories
Second: different spellings
Third:     “nearly the same” - meanings.

But I wonder:
Why not open 2 windows?
One with the basic data, your LOV and a second one with the PurchaseOrderLines submask NoPartLines.
Anytime you need a new Value, go to your first window, create a new Value, save it.
Go to your second window and you can use your new Value.

All the best and good luck.
