I run a consulting practice in France, focused on procurement and industrial performance. I am working alongside a 3D scanning company for an industrial client migrating from SAP ECC to IFS. Asset data collection is the critical path on that project.
Our contribution is methodological. We help decide how deep the asset breakdown should go before anything is collected, and we feed the equipment data from 3D scans and virtual tours rather than from repeated site visits.
My background is SAP. I have run SAP projects my whole career. IFS I do not know, and I am not going to pretend otherwise: everything I know about it comes from the vendor documentation, which is exactly why I am posting here.
Three questions I could not settle from the docs alone.
One. How does the Pipe System structure actually handle a line, its sections and its supports? The client needs to locate every support along a pipe run.
Two. Where is the practical stopping point on Functional Object granularity in a process plant? We understand a Functional Object cannot be moved or re-parented once created, which makes that arbitration irreversible in practice.
Three. How far does Type Designation really cut the collection effort on preventive maintenance task templates?
Beyond the questions, I would be glad to talk with an independent IFS consultant on maintenance and asset management. First an hour or two of review, then a few paid days if the engagement goes ahead. Happy to take it to private message.
