You may also check the below setting on the Part (Master Part or Part Catalog) window as well for the Part Number in question.

Also, as far as I am aware each Serial Number is unique to the Part Number and not allowed to be repeated between different companies as well. It may be worth understanding if this is something that has been done before in your organization?
