Adding a Custom Field with data type Reference creates a null selector and null list

Why is 'CPEGEN_<null>List' shown in Advancedview and 'CPEGEN_<null>Selector in Selector in the custom attribute LOV added through page designer? The custom attribute is defined as a reference field.

The customer attribute LOV is not populating with data.
