Does anyone have a simple explanation of what the Filter and Grouping does, please?

I naively anticipated (having filtered on all “open” projects) the chart would split the ‘stack’ (a la Excel Stacked Column) to show total hours per project - one colour per project?

Or is that not the intent?

  • I’m not clear what “Projects exists as parameter” indicates

Filter and Grouping on Projects
This table is used to group and filter on multiple projects and highlight them in the Resource Analysis page. The Project Group Text is used to describe the selected projects and will be shown in the Resource Analysis.

If multiple projects should be added to the filtration and grouping, there are different ways to filter the projects shown in the list:

  • All Projects
If this is selected, all projects will be shown.
  • Projects exist as parameter
If this is selected, only projects that already entered to the list will be shown.
  • Projects not exist as parameter
If this is selected, only projects that are not already entered to the list will be shown.

For example, if we have Project 1Project 2, and Project 3Project 1 and Project 2 will be added to the filter and grouping list, whilst Project 3 will not. - HOW?

  1. If All Projects has been selected - Project 1Project 2, and Project 3 will be shown.
  2. If Projects exist as parameter has been selected - Project 1 and Project 2 will be shown.
  3. If Projects not exist as parameter has been selected - Project 3 will be shown.

Thanks

Hi Linda,

This option is a means to be able to explicitly filter on multiple projects and/or group multiple projects together into a single group to then compare with other demands. The Project Group Text is the name that this single group is then given in the chart and the legend.

For example it could be that there are various demands across multiple sources of which some of them are for projects A, B, C, D and E - however those for project E can be ignored from the analysis and so the filter option would be on projects A, B, C and D. However projects A and B need to be viewed separately from those of projects C and D and so the group option is switched on for project A and B. The chart would then show the demands relating to projects A and B as a separate block compared to those for projects C and D.

Please note this assumes that no other grouping or filtering options are applied as, if they were, for example filtering or grouping on Demand Status, would then be applied as well.

The three options within the 'Select Batch of Projects' dialog of 'All Project', 'Projects exist as parameter' and 'Projects not exist as parameter' as just different ways to assist in selecting which projects should be added or updated . So 'Projects exist as parameter' is a way to just show those projects that are already in the 'Filter and Group on Projects' list, likewise 'Projects not exist as parameter' would shows those projects not currently in the 'Filter and Group on Projects' list etc. This is done to help select the records that need to be added or updated accordingly.

So in the earlier example having filtered on projects A, B, C and D and grouped on projects A and B then let’s say that the grouping need to be turned off. Therefore selecting the 'Projects exist as parameter' would just show projects A, B, C and D it would then be possible to select all four projects and make sure that only the filter toggle was on, or alternatively just projects A and B could be manually selected or further refined by other criteria etc. prior to deciding whether to update the filter and/or grouping toggle etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards

Hugh
