• Set a duration
• Planned the start date on the Work Task
• Planned the finish date on the Work Task
• Added a Resource Demand line
• Ensured the Work Task is at "Released" status or higher
• Ensured the Work Order is "Released"
• Assigned the work to the Resource
• Accepted the work

After completing these steps, the assignment seems to work fine for me.
