- By-Product: An unintentional secondary product produced simultaneously with the main product, typically holding a lower value compared to the main product.
- Disassembly Component: A part produced during the disassembly of a product.
Typically, disassembly components are part of a disassembly-type structure — i.e., where you disassemble a product and receive these disassembly components into stock using a disassembly-type shop order.
However, you can also include disassembly components in other types of structures. For example, you might remove a component and receive it into stock during a repair, or you might use a manufacturing structure to convert a product from A to B and remove a component during that process that should be received into stock.
A by-product can be produced in any type of process. Examples include scrap metal, sawdust, or slag.
From a system perspective, there are some differences. A disassembly component can have a scrap factor (and be reported as scrapped) and can be serial-tracked. You can also have a control plan inspection against a disassembly component.
if you describe your process I can try to help recommend what is most suitable to use.
