Two work centers sharing one physical area: how to prevent simultaneous scheduling without CBS?

IFS Cloud 25R1 SU12, on-prem, Manufacturing. No Constraint-Based Scheduling.

We have an existing Work Center 1 (a press). We are adding Work Center 2 (a kitting station) that will physically sit inside Work Center 1's operating area. Both take machine and labor clocking. They are separate work centers for costing and capacity reporting, but because they share the same floor space they cannot run shop orders at the same time. Initially Work Center 2 will run on the opposite shift. Later they may be physically separated.

Standard infinite and finite scheduling treat each work center as its own capacity pool, so nothing stops a planner or the scheduler from placing an operation on each at the same time. Today the only control is the planner watching for it.

What we are testing: separate work time calendars per work center covering only their shift, with Finite capacity on both, so the scheduler cannot overlap them. Fallback is a Quick Report that flags overlapping open operations on the two work centers.

Questions:

  1. Is there a standard IFS Cloud configuration (without CBS) that models a shared constraint between two work centers?
  2. Has anyone used the calendar approach for this, and does it hold up when planners manually reschedule operations?
  3. Any pitfalls with switching a long-running work center from the default calendar and Infinite to a shift calendar and Finite?
  4. Any better patterns from other manufacturers who have handled shared-cell or shared-floor-space situations?

Hi,

I think the idea of having separate calendars which never overlap for each of the Work Centers is the best idea as it reflects what is happening in reality.

This means that in the infinite scheduling world, the system should not schedule the Work Centers to run at the same time.

The same thing is true when the planners try to reschedule; the operations will only be scheduled on the Work Center when there is working time in the connected calender.

The Finite Capacity toggle on the Work Center will not make any difference when it comes to infinite scheduling - this is primarily used in conjunction with the finite scheduling functionality CBS/APB (Constraint Based Scheduling/Advanced Planning Boad) and MSO (Manufacturing Scheduling and Optimization).

When you change the Work Center Calendar there is going to be a potential impact on the already existing shop orders. These should be rescheduled by the planner to reflect the updated working time.
