Yes, it is possible to control the serial number format when creating serial numbers in IFS Cloud. During the serial number creation process, the system allows users to define Prefix, Suffix, and Length for the numeric portion of the serial number when using the Sequence option.

However, the exact starting number cannot be manually defined as a specific numeric value (for example, starting directly at 123456). Instead, the numbering sequence is generated automatically by the system based on the length defined for the numeric section, starting from the lowest value within that range (typically 000001).

Using the Prefix and Suffix, you can format the serial number similar to the requested structure.

Example configuration:

Parameter Example Value
Prefix SN
Length 6
Suffix -01

This would generate serial numbers such as:

  • SN000001-01

  • SN000002-01

  • SN000003-01

Therefore, a format like SN000001-01 can be achieved, but starting directly at SN123456-01 is not supported through standard configuration.

Test Scenario (Validation in IFS Cloud)

The following steps were tested to validate the functionality.

1. Create Inventory Part

Navigate to:
Inventory → Inventory Part → New

Create a new inventory part and save it.
A pop-up window “Settings for New Part in Part Catalog” will appear.

2. Enable Serial Tracking

In the Serial Tracking section, enable the toggle to activate serial tracking for the part.

Once enabled, the part becomes serial-controlled.

3. Create Purchase / Receive Inventory Part

Navigate to Receive Inventory Part and filter using the created part number.

Enter:

  • Quantity

  • Location

4. Define Cost Structure

Define the required cost structure and proceed.

5. Serial Number Entry Page

When receiving the part, the Enter Serials page appears.

There are two options to enter serial numbers:

Option 1 – Manual Entry

  • Click "+"

  • Enter each serial number manually.

Option 2 – Sequence Generation

  • Select Sequence

6. Define Serial Number Format

The Sequence / Interval page opens.

Here you can define:

Field Purpose
Prefix Characters before the number (e.g., SN)
Length Number of digits for the numeric part
Suffix Characters after the number (e.g., -01)

Example:

Prefix Length Suffix
SN 6 -01

This generates serial numbers such as:

  • SN000001-01

  • SN000002-01

  • SN000003-01

7. Complete Receiving

Click OK to generate the serial range and proceed with receiving the inventory part with the generated serial numbers.

Conclusion

IFS Cloud supports serial number formatting using Prefix, Length, and Suffix, allowing standardized serial number structures. However, the starting numeric value cannot be manually defined, as the sequence is generated automatically by the system.
