Prototype Shop Order Structure Handling

Hi All,

In Cloud 25R2 (we have also checked 24R1) we have raised a Protype Shop Order and on defining a Tentative “Manufacturing” Structure and Routing the system appears to be only pulling through the routing, the structure is left blank. We are putting this down to a bug, but thought i would see if others have experienced this issue.

*Please note: this is a Structure Type = Manufacturing, which has a “Tentative” alternate.

Its normal behavior for the standard manufacturing structure in tentative to not pull through to a standard manufacturing shop order, but it was my understanding that a “Prototype” Shop Order overrides this and is able to utilise a tentative manufactured structure. It’s like the system is only half applying the logic as it pulls through the “Tentative” manufacturing routing onto the shop order.

Thanks in advance

Kev

Tentative structures and routings can only be used for prototype shop orders. Manufacturing type orders requires a buildable structure and routing.

Hi Bjorn,

Thanks for the response, though i understand this already, maybes my question wasn’t clear enough so let me elaborate.

I have a standard manufacturing part with a standard structure and routing which are  both in “Tentative” status.

I raise a Prototype Shop Order, and manually select the “tentative” standard manufacturing structure and routing. I click save

For reference, the business does not want to use Prototype structures and routings, just the tentative standard manufacturing structures and routings.
Just to show that there is a component on the structure this is the tentative product structure
We have no problem with the Routing Operations pulling through as shown below.

Is this normal behaviour or could this be a bug?

Thanks for your time on this

Kev

Hi @Kev3458,

First, for your information, I tested it briefly in a 25R2 environment. There, it behaves exactly the same as it does for you.

There are now two possibilities. Either you are fortunate, and it is an issue that it does not work with the material. Or you are unfortunate, and it is an error that this works with the operations. 😉

In your place, I would open a support ticket and point out that it does not work correctly with the material. Because I can select the alternative of the type ‘Manufacturing’, so the material should also be inserted afterwards.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response and thanks for testing in 25R2.

We raised a ticket yesterday, i was just curious as to anyone else’s experiences or knowledge of this. I think its a very particular process, and the fact i couldn’t find anything else related to this subject on the community, tells me it is not a common process, though good to get it out in the open community forum. I’ll keep the question updated with the outcome of the support ticket.

Thanks

I just wanted to add this explanation from the Cloud Documentation

Create Prototype Shop Order

Explanation

Use this activity to manually create a new prototype shop order for a specified part.

To create a prototype shop order:

  • Enter the site and the part number of the part that you want to manufacture as a prototype.
  • Enter the desired Lot Size that you want to manufacture.
  • Select Prototype in the Order Type drop-down.
  • Manually select the revision/alternate to use in the Structure or Routing sections. For a prototype shop order you can use structure/revision type either Manufacturing or Repair. Also alternates in status Tentative can be used for prototype orders.

There should not be difference between how the system behaves for Structures and Routings, so there is a BUG in the System.
