Hello,

When configuring a CTO with by-products in IFS Cloud, we need an interim order to be created. However, when attempting to create the interim order, I receive the following message:

“No buildable routing revision/alternative exists for part xxxx at Site on the date 2-SEPT-25.”

I checked part xxxx and confirmed that the part type is set to "by-product." It does not contain a routing and/or a product structure.

What could be causing this error?

Kind regards,
Willem

Maintain Interim Orders:
Explanation - Use this activity to create a new interim order for a specified part. Interim orders are created when evaluating an interim demand head record. A new interim order is created each time a component is added to the top-level interim order.

For outside work center operations, you can either select the Outside Operation Backflush type or the Outside Operation Supply type. If an outside operation item has not been entered for the outside operation, a message will appear. However, you have the option of creating a new outside operation item.

The interim order can also be used to create a DOP order. When this is done, the DOP gets its structure from the interim order.

Prerequisites:
 • IFS/Manufacturing Standards structures and routings should be defined for the part.
• If configured parts are to be used, IFS/Configuration Characteristics and IFS/Configuration Back Office must have been installed and associated configuration characteristics and back-office configuration rules defined.
• An interim demand head must be created.

So even though these are by-products, will they also require a routing?

Nowhere in the process (from intake to delivery) is a routing needed for a by-product. I only encounter this issue when creating an interim order.

As per my understanding:
Even though by-products themselves do not require routings for standard processing (since they are typically outputs of another part’s manufacturing process), they cannot be used to create interim orders in IFS Cloud.

This is because:
“A structure revision/alternative must be in the Buildable status for the configuration of the inventory part. The part type must not be Remanufactured, Disassembly, or By-Product.”

This means IFS Cloud does not allow interim orders to be created for by-products, regardless of whether a routing exists.

Summary:
By-products are not intended to be built independently; they are generated as part of another product’s routing.
Therefore, IFS Cloud does not support interim order creation for by-products, and the system will throw the error you encountered if attempted.

If the business process requires the by-product to be handled independently (e.g., tracked, stocked, or sold), you may need to:

  • Reclassify the part as a standard manufactured part, and

  • Define a routing and structure for it.

In Apps10 you could have a by-product (part B, purchased raw) defined for a Configuration Structure (part A). When evaluating the Interim Header for the configured part A, you would receive a Warning (not an Error) that ‘Component part B as a by-product is not handled by DOP. Hence ignored.’

Is it possible in Cloud, with the introduction of By-Product as a new part type, that the Interim Order evaluation process needs corrected to ignore parts of this type?

The solution we applied was to assign a fictitious routing to the by-product and set the routing to Buildable. This makes it possible to create an interim order.

@12gWilleD is the by-product inventory part still of part type By-Product?

@matt.watters , the part type is still a by-product. Kind regards, Willem
