Configuration Usage(Inventory Part>Manufacturing Tab)

Hello

I have a question about Configuration Usage. 

Changing the configuration usage to Variant or Option has any effect on system?

I have learned that the master schedule does not work for a special configuration id. So i want to understand the reason of using configuration usage option.
