Is it possbile to remove / delete old reports from the database? Having tested various things in BR, there are now many unwanted reports visible. How would one go about removing or deleteing them?

You can do this from the Manage Report Structure pane which is available in the BR design mode. Once you select a report and right click on it, you will see the option to delete the report. From here you can delete the report from the database. Make sure to unpublish the report before deleting.

Its possible to Delete multiple reports at once using the Manage Report Structure feature.
It will try to delete reports one by one, and will give you a detailed log of the operation.
