My end goal is to modify an existing report model. I would like to add other fields not found on the original entity/view of the report, but that are related in some way.
I’ve gathered that in order to modify existing reports, I have to do it through “core files,” but I dont know how to download/access those core files.
Any help would be appreciated.

As mentioned you need to copy the .report file into customer repo and do the modifications in the .report file in the customer repo.
you should create a customization project in devstudio tool and direct to downloaded cust solution repo to the workspace of the project and start modify the .report model
