I write to ask you if you, can explain, for what reasons - when a document is uploaded to IFS that the Original File Type may appear as N/A?

I have tried viewing documents with Original File Type N/A and am unable to view them, I receive a "Restricted File Type" error when clicking View Document.

My initial thinking on this would be that a user attempts to upload the document, something goes wrong in the file transfer process and as a result IFS ends up with an uploaded file that it cannot understand.

Can you indicate:
1) Are there any other reasons, besides an upload going wrong, that cause a document to be assigned file type N/A? If so, what are these reasons?

2) Has IFS ever given consideration, if N/A file type documents are a result of uploads going wrong to presenting user with a prominent message saying something like:
"Something went wrong with your upload. Users won't be able to view / download your file in it's current state"
and for this message to provide users with a second chance to upload their desired file/revision of file.

If users are not told in a prominent way when an upload goes wrong, then, they are likely to assume their upload went okay, move on and it will not be until someone else has a need for the document that they then discover that they can't download the file/information they need.

3) Would the best way to deal with files with File Type N/A be to go to the button shown in the screenshot below and create a new revision of the document?

@GrayHam the file type N/A is a temporary file type used in the code until the upload is completed. But it is bit strange that the files you check-in ends up with this file type. Ideally if something goes wrong during the checkin process and not completed, it should rollback and clear the file reference.

Maybe you can look into more details in what scenarios it happens and post it here. Is it for specific repository type or file types or file sizes, etc etc

Have you tried deleting the file using File Operations\Delete Document File command from Document revision. Or delete in the Document Revision\File Refs tab?

Hello @diwelk,

I now have an open support case with IFS about this which has gone to the Operational Success Team.

They have been able to reproduce issue with file uploading in IFS environments and deliberately cutting off the internet connection part the way through.

My own experiments have resulted in similar experiences including some instances where an interrupted and resumed upload results in two attachments (one with the expected file type and one with N/A)

The support reps have indicated that they will discuss with R&D about the upload problem generally to see what can be done. I’ll look to update this thread once any final outcomes are known.

All the best,

GrayHam
