I am playing with intersite orders where I have an internal supplier to a sales part in a supply site.  The internal supplier is a separate site.  What settings have to be made to make this automatic from the point of release of the demand site customer order to the PO to the supply site, release and send the PO create the customer order on the supply site and release it??

Yes, please review the related basic data regarding message setup defaults. For the automatic creation of internal customer order and release of it, you just need to setup the Automatic Approval and Automatic Release in Customer/Sales/Message Defaults:
