Change from Manual to Automatic Serial Numbering

Has anyone changed from Manual to Automatic Serial numbering, having chosen Manual initially and have historic Manual transactions?  

“Help” seems to indicate you can …

 

… but we have tried and encounter this message…

 

Any feedback/information/advice/workaround suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the standard system behavior and it is not a bug in the core application. The “Automatic” serial rule follows a sequence in generating serial numbers. If already define serial numbers in the part catalogue are numeric, it is allowed to change the serial rule to “Automatic” from “Manual” since, it can maintain the serial sequence.

The system should not allow serial rule changed to Automatic, if there is any Serial Reservation in Alphanumeric for a particular part number in serial reservation pool. Since, consistent serial sequence can’t be maintained.

Help text need to be further improved.

For the record, let me refer to an existing RnD response regarding this;

So you cannot turn on automatic serial numbers, since change Alphanumeric serial number exist for this part. 

And I cannot think of a workaround at the moment, may be an expert will. Not sure.
