Part Serial Tracking Pro/Con - IFS Cloud

Forum|alt.badge.img

Currently launching our first Site in IFS Cloud, and have varying internal experience and opinions on serializing parts. Specifically, stocking our finished goods in IFS Inventory with serial data.  I’m hoping to get some pro/cons from the community while we continue with testing. What has your experience been? Do serials complicate transactions in any way, inventory based or accounting? Are they benefiting inventory control? What didn’t you know before implementing serial tracking?

Some additional details:

We plan to use handling units for stock, picking/shipping.

Our business is automotive based, and we are reviewing customer requirements for traceability.

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback!

Hi @TBugner,

Firstly, from a theoretical standpoint, I recommend reviewing the following two "About" documents. They provide comprehensive information on the available features.

When dealing with a large volume of serial-related transactions, performance issues may arise. We’ve addressed this to some extent, and you can find more details in the Inventory Transaction Aggregation for Serials document.

Please refer to the following documentation for further information:

  • Part Serial Handling

  • Inventory Transaction Aggregation for Serial and Handling Units

I’d also be interested to hear about any hands-on experiences working with serials from our colleagues.

regards,

Piyal

Piyal,

Can you provide any more detail on what type of performance issues?  Did the system just run slow?

Hi @cweidner,

For example, consider you have a cost per serial part to do transactions. If you do transactions like material requisition issue for such a part, say for 1000 serials, then we need to create 1000 transactions and at least 2000 posting lines when issuing. I assume here you only have a minimum number of posting lines of 2.

So, it entirely depends on your serial data load and the complexity associated with such transactions.

Regards,

Piyal
