Can anyone provide with explanation how PNG works?

I would like to get more knowledge when useage is profitable, what are prerequisites - but from practical perspective. 

I will be greatful for business cases with consclusions that describes strenghts and weakneses of this solution.

This is a starting point but I am curios if  I can apply to the solution for my current client. I think topic will develop.
