How to Track Work In Process in a Project

I am working with a ship builder that has the requirement to track work in process as it moves from one work area to another. Think of large modules of a ship that may move to various areas. The manufactured components are then assembled together into a piece of work an process. It is not yet a finished item, but the customer wants to be able to locate that item somewhere in the facility, Oh let's complicate this a be=it more. The module that has been assembled may not have a part number.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away I worked on the project for the US Army at an arsenal that manufactured Howitzer cannons. They also wanted the ability to track the cannon tube (barrel) from the foundry, through all its manufacturing steps an assembly steps.

We were un the midst of degning a process to do this but then the US Army put the project on hold.

What creative solution have you seen or devised to more accurately tracking of work in process at the LOCATION level??

In addition to the location level, I would interested if there is a solution to track the Work In Progress for a project deliverable structure. The deliverables could contain multiple manufacturing shop orders (subassemblies). Is there a solution for this within the IFS project deliverables?

Hi Vernon,

The only way to actually track it is to create multiple shop orders in a structure, for what is probably a Section or a block of a vessel.

Then you can store it on different locations and see it in the inventory part in stock.

But that is probably not wanted from the customer side.

What I’ve done in one of the projects, is to add a location field to the SO Operation.

That way the previous operation could define where they stored the SO in progress for the next operation.

This only works if the SO lot size is 1 (which is the case in your example I think), or if an operation always finishes the full qty.

What we did in the flow, the operation was reported as closed,

That was the trigger for the Internal logistic guys to pick up the semi-finished product and move it

Or to the next work center,

or to a temporary location (they would fill the custom field),

or to stock if it was the last operation.

@AveTonitM tracking the WIP on a project, that is probably tracking the progress is a bit more complex. You could have cost progress, duration progress. Having 1 big SO only gives you progress when the full thing is done.
Though you might be able to calculate at any time, the current actual cost / the total expected cost and move that to the progress of the activity, weighted if there are more SO's connected

Hope this helps a bit

Regards Erik
