Start Downtime/Stop Downtime in Shop Floor Workbench

Hi,

What is the user case behind the Start Downtime and Stop Downtime functionality in Shop Floor Workbench?

If I Start Downtime on an ongoing operation, why only the machine time clocking stop and labor keep on clocking? Why not Stop Production?

Is it wrong practice to use Start Downtime on an ongoing operation, instead of Interrupt the operation?

Cheers

Hi @AanHGTS ,

This is used to indicate the downtime of a particular work center resource. Basically, to indicate that your work center (machine or working area) is not available for operations for a period of time. This could be due to something like the machine is broken (or can be due to various reasons).

If you want your labor clocking too to be stopped as a result of machine clocking being stopped automatically, then you can use the below setting in the work center.

It is totally ok to start a downtime in the middle of the operations. Such could happen in a practical scenario. As a result, system will automatically stop the clocking of the relevant operations (connected to work center).

Additionally, during an operation you might identify a machine fault and wants to interrupt your operation. You can do that by stopping the operation using an Interruption Cause.
At the same time an automatic request can be initiated to start a downtime for that machine as well. You can setup that in the Interruption Cause like below.

Is this the explanation you are looking for ?

Downtime is used to measure and classify periods when the machine is unavailable for any reason such as breakdown, jam etc. If you start downtime for a machine which is currently running an operation, the machine clocking for that operation will be stopped since the machine cannot be working on an operation and being down on the same time. The labor time on the operation can continue, or being stopped as well depending on the “Auto Stop Labor Clocking” setting in the Work Center window. It might be logic to have the labor to continue to run if the operation can be continued on another machine, but in other cases it might be suitable to stop the labor automatically as well.

If the operation cannot continue to run on another machine, another great option is to use Stop Production and stop it as Interrupted.  The interruption cause can then be connected to a Downtime Cause that automatically starts downtime for the machine. It can also be connected to an indirect job that auto starts indirect time for the employee
