Manufacturing and Purchasing a part - Sourcing Rules?

We are new to IFS Cloud and see that we do not have the option to have a Part Type that is BOTH for Manufactured and Purchased. We wanted to see what method is available to use to be able to drive the Manufacturing of a part, but also Purchase the part when we do not have the ability to MFG at that time.

We also want to take into consideration inspecting the material when it is either manufactured or purchased.  Ideally, we would like to use the same Control Plan to inspect the product whether it is Manufactured in house or Purchased.

Hello,

As far as it comes to Material Planning & Costing it works fine with one part number. Check below page

And from the Shop Order Requisition page the planner can take a decision to purchase the part instead.

And that brings up following assistant

Hope this helps. I can show you my costing setup also if you want.

Cheers,

Mats

Hi @jnolan ,

For this casuistic, you can set the part type = Manufactured and also you can create a Purchase Part and related data (like Supplier for Purchase Part, Purchase Control Plan, etc.).

Or else, in the other way around, i.e. to set Part Type = Purchased and then create the Manufacturing structure and Route and Manufacturing Control Plan.

The Part Type usually is taken with the most common used option, but this doesn’t block the possibility of creating the other configurations.

Regarding use of Control Plan, as they are used in different modules and different flows, you need to use a Purchase Control Plan when receiving purchases and Manufacturing Control Plan for Shop Orders.

I hope this clarifies your questions.

Regards,

Pilar

Hi Pilar,

Sorry, I sould have been more clear.  I was hoping to use the same part number and be able to manufacture it most of the time, but purchase it for the times when I am unable to manufacture enough of our own.

In other systems I had the option of “Both” that would allow me to generate a Shop Order or add the part to a Purchase Order.  MRP would default to suggest a Shop Order, but if it saw I had a PO open for the item, it would take the delivery of the material into cosideration for the plan.

I would like to avoid having 2 part numbers to maintain.

Hi @jnolan ,

Agree with @majose . Once you have setup part as Manufactured, MRP will create shop order requisitions by default, but you can convert them into purchase requisitions, if needed. So then, yes, you can use the same part for this flow.

Pilar

Fabulous.  Thanks Mats and Pilar,

If I have a Control Plan setup for inspecting the quality of the manufactured part, would it still be used if we purchased it or would I have to create a separate plan for when it is purchased?

If I cannot use the same Control Plan, would I be able to do something like a rework order with a single step just to get it to route through the Control Plan?

Hi @jnolan,

No, you would not be able to use the same Manufacturing Control Plan if you are opting Procurement route to fulfill the demand and would have to configure a separate Purchase Control Plan to inspect incoming stock at the time of receiving.

Again, have to configure a separate control plan even if you create a separate rework order since each Manufacturing Control Plan would be configured for Part Revision, Routing Revision, and Routing Alternate.

I would suggest you implement an easier solution for the end users and proceed with the separate Control Plan for Manufacturing and Procurement since the frequency to procure a manufacuted Part would not be so frequent.

Hi @jnolan ,

Agree with @Abdul .

If purchase receipt won’t be very frequent, you can always proceed in there with:

  • Register arrival in an arrival location
  • Register inspection results for the arrived parts

You can control/validate both flows with custom events to force the user to receive in arrival and to register inspection results before moving to picking location.

Pilar
