Thank you @Björn Hultgren that’s an interesting point about the production schedules that I hadn’t considered. I guess with this method we could still edit the components as we receipt, to reflect the changing % split of the raw material to keep the raw material inventory values correct. I can definitely see how we can use the takt time calc to flow the demand through. To keep things simple, I think we may start by setting the raw material to planning method B or C (it’s ordered every 3-4 days as storage space is limited). We can calculate total mash requirements from the data in the system and maybe create a report that the planner can use to see any upcoming abnormal peaks/troughs. If this is not enough we can look at the Production Schedule solution (I may swap to a PS anyway, even if we don’t end up using it to drive demand).
If the mash is produced in a batch that later is used in several end products I believe it is better to have this as a real (not a phantom) step in the BOM, and actually create shop orders for it and receive it to stock as mash that is later consumed on shop orders for the end products. The BOM for the mash would then contain 50% of potato A and 50% of potato B (you can use Recipe Structure to define it as a percentage rather than quantity per assembly as done in the product structure, but both would work). The Reserve/Issue Method should however be set to Manual. This means you manually on the shop order issue the relevant quantity of potato A and B. So system would accept to receive the mash to stock also when you have issued more or less than the planned quantity of potato A and B respectively. I meant from a data entry point of view, the user hasn’t added this info into the routing steps, so when they run Calculate Lead Time, it is shorter than they want it to be (i.e. shorter than in real life), so the start date is too late. To get around this, they just don’t run the Lead Time calculation, which means when they run MRP it defaults to using what they’ve manually typed in on the Inventory Part page for Manufacturing Lead Time. So the question is, if they do (accidently) calculate the lead time for a part, is there a way to undo this, so the system reverts back to using what’s been typed in on the Inventory Part?
Thanks for the reply Mats, I agree, the MRP calculation method is going to be more accurate to the Shop Order start date (you are correct they are backwards infinite scheduled). OK so effectively I think you are saying manual SORs currently still use an “older” system logic to determine the start date as in earlier versions of IFS the routing information was not captured on the SOR. The situation I’m looking at, the user can currently set a lead time for the SOR manually by entering a Manufacturing Lead Time on the Inventory Part main tab. However, this is only because they have not run the Lead Time calculation. They’ve run the Lead Time calculation on a few parts without realizing the impact, which means for these parts they get a shorter lead time that they want (as I would guess queue time, transport time etc. is not currently included in the routing). They do get a change in start date when converting the SOR to SO, but this is OK, as they are mainly concerned about converting t

Thanks for the reply, it makes sense. I think what was (and still is to some degree) confusing me is that you can also select Set 0, even if you are creating your forecast directly in the Level 1 Parts and aggregating up to to the Level 0 Part. Or when you disaggregate from Level 0 to Level 1, you can choose Set 0 as the Target Set.So from a system aspect, Set 0 doesn’t seem to be tied to Level 0 Parts specifically. So am I right in thinking Set 0 is intended to be used, say, for your ‘start of year’ base plan data (with the assumption being, this would usually be high level i.e. Level 0 Family Parts), that you leave as a reference? However, from a system point of view it acts no differently to a user defined set? It’s the fact it has it’s own defined Set Type that, to me, implied it might behave differently to the ones marked as ‘other’… but perhaps I’m overthinking it!
