+2How can I update the default (*) routing from a set of alternates?
For example, I have a new machine which is now the preferred manufacturing route. The old machine is still in use and is a valid routing, so I won’t retire this routing and up rev. I’ll create an alternate routing for the new machine at the current rev, but I want to make this my default.

The only way to make another alternate than (*) the default is to use lot sized based routings so system will pick alternate depending on the lot size of the order.
In you case I suggest you copy alternate * with the old machine into another alternate, and update * with the new machine.
