@Marcusja2002 normally you decide on lot/batch tracking strategy during Part Master creation.
Indeed, if you have qty on stock with Not Lot Tracking * as lot/batch, you cannot change it to Order Based as long as you have stock onhand.
I would advise to use Order Based for lot/batch as this will take the PONo-POLine-PORelNo-ReceiptNo as lot/batch for your purchased goods and ShopOrderNo-RelNo-SeqNo for your goods manufactured. This way, you’ll be able to quickly tell which was the PO or ShopOrder through which the stock was received.
In your situation, what you could do to enable lot tracking without creating new part numbers is:
- count-out the qty from stock
- change Part setup to Order Based
- count-in the stock qty → you’ll need to provide a manual lot/batch for the counted-in stock. But from there onwards, your receipts will automatically take the PO or Shop Order as lot/batch no.
Of course, you’ll need to work with your Finance team while doing this to make sure the financial postings land on correct accounts during COUNT-OUT and COUNT-IN transactions.

I was coming here to say exactly this……
Good luck.
Thank you both, we will give this a go.
