I have a number of workflows, but when I deploy them, I have no clue what/why/where, so i just put the same deployment name in each time.
Can anyone explain what this does or what it means, and if it makes any difference, or what are best practices?

As far as i know there is no significance with the deployment name with regards to the functionality of the workflow. But we can use that to convey a small detail about the deployed version. As the value we put can be seen in the workflow page we can get a hint into what that particular workflow version is about without opening up the workflow
eg:
Enter your E-mail address. We'll send you an e-mail with instructions to reset your password.
