On-line job is not finished when the spinner disappears from the screen.

I have a scenario where I have a large number of records that are affected by a change in the Engineering Part Navigator using the Edit All function.  When hitting save the system gives you the normal indication that it is working (the spinner) and after a while, the spinner will disappear from the screen.  This gives the illusion that the on-line job has finished its work.  But, if you go ahead and try to change one of the records, the system tells you that the record is being changed.  Any ideas what would cause the spinner to disappear but that the on-line job has not finished?
