Hi @Janith Bandara
BTL91 was introduced in 1991 to initiate foreign payments. The BTL91 standard is based on old SWIFT standards, which has not met current expectations. The whole payment landscape is in transition to new formats based on ISO. This is the main reason for cancelling the BTL91 format and replacing it with the new ISO20022.
Currently in the IFS application ISO20022 payment initiation is supported with PAIN.001.001.03 version. According to my understanding, the main differences between BTL91 and IFS supported ISO20022 payment initiation are as follows.
| BTL91 | ISO20022 |
Output type | File | XML |
Multiple batches in one file | No | Yes |
Status update messages pain 002 | No | Yes |
Character set | ASCII | UTF-8 |
Furthermore, ISO20022 payment initiation has been developed in the IFS application to support both SEPA and Non SEPA payments.

Lihini.
Thank you. Just to clarify...
- ISO2022 provides support for PAIN.001.001.003.
- If we want PAIN.001.001.009, then we will need to request it as a chargeable consulting service.
Are both of my statements correct?
Secondly, can you tell me the plans to bring version PAIN.001.001.009 into standard IFS? Do you have an expected release date?
Hi @Tony_Stewart
Currently the IFS application supports PAIN.001.001.003 version in the standard application. I hope it will be possible to request the new version, may be as a customization.
I would like to know if there is any bank that is currently using the new version? If you know, please update me.
Furthermore, I am not aware of implementation or release of PAIN.001.001.009 in the standard IFS application.
Regards,
Lihini.
Hi Lihini, thank you for the confirmation. We have been informed by ABN Amro that they already support PAIN.001.001.009.
