I don’t know which version you’re on, but it has been my experience that you cannot rename a part that is on a serial object. 

It is best to scrap the serial object. You can create a custom field with scrapped serial object info to get history for the newly made serial object.

Hi Aleks. No this is NOT possible in any core version. By the way what is your use case here? There can be other workarounds if you can elaborate the use case more.

​@Mayura Wasantha I’m upgrading from APP9 to Cloud. In APP9 we create prepare work order quotation and then the prepare work order. We enter an object ID on the work order. In Cloud we’re planning to use prepare work order and work tasks to process workload for customer assets received for repair. We’re exploring the possibility to not use serial object / object on the work order. A main reason is that we’d like to use part serial rename functionality on part serial screen. However, if a serial object exists the rename cannot be completed. This error is received: The serial exists in Service Management and cannot be renamed. So for anything that we process once we go live in Cloud we will be fine. However, due to our current APP9 process we have thousands of serial objects and if we service it again, we are unable to rename if a part number or serial number is needed. Is there anyway around this? As of yet, I’ve not found it.
