New Google Chrome updates impacting Mobile Universal on Android devices

NOTE: This issue applies to the Mobile Universal application ONLY (not Mobile Edge) and this issue only occurs on Android devices (not iOS devices).

Recent Google Chrome updates are causing an issue with the horizontal ‘carousel’ scrolling functionality in the Mobile Universal application.  This prevents users from scrolling all the way to the left to access all of the tabs in the Work List module.  Users will need to click on the Uninstall updates to roll back the Google Chrome update to resolve the issue (and hopefully future updates to Chrome will correct the problem).

Other workarounds you can use would be to run the Mobile Universal application through a different browser app (one not built on the same Chromium Engine that Google Chrome and Edge run on) such as Bing.  If you are still running on the V11 or V12 Mobile Universal platform this application is end-of-life and on Restricted Support so please reach out to your Project Manager to get started on your upgrade to the latest supported release: V15.4.9.0 of Mobile Edge.
Thanks,
Reid

Note: On my Samsung Galaxy A70 the Uninstall updates rolled Google Chrome from V114.0.5735.226 back to V91.0.4472.164.  I had to reboot the device before re-launching Astea Mobile in order to get the issue resolved.

Additional note: Roll back the Android System Webview App at the same time you roll back the Google Chrome App (and then reboot the device afterwards).  This seems to resolve it in all cases.

This worked for one of our application user. Thanks for providing this proactively.

Some technicians have reported that the Google Chrome and Android System Webview applications automatically upgraded again (after doing a rollback previously).  Android gives you the ability to manually control the auto-update settings for each application (or you can set this to apply to all apps in the Play Store under Settings...Network Preferences...Auto-update apps and selecting the option “Don’t auto-update apps”).  To do this on an individual app basis go to the Play Store and search for the app (i.e. Chrome or Android System Webview).  Click on the app and that will take you to a screen which has the “Update” and “Open” buttons.  Click on the vertical three dots icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen and then Uncheck the “Enable auto-update” checkbox displayed there:

One last option you can use is to restrict the application updates through the use of MDM software if your company has this installed on the mobile devices.

We have a customer reporting that even with the Enable Auto-Update setting disabled on the Android System Webview and Google Chrome apps that the device is still updating those applications randomly...So we tried changing the auto-update apps setting from “Over Wi-Fi only” to “Don’t auto-update apps” thinking that would stop it from updating completely but that didn’t work, either:

Is anybody else experiencing a similar issue?  If so, how did you resolve it?  MDM software on the device?
Thanks,
Reid

Is there any permanent fix available for this issue? Our techs are still reporting this issue.

Hi Deepesh,
The Mobile Universal application is end-of-life and on Restricted Support so you have a couple of options at this time:
You can continue to roll back the updates on the device manually.
You can install MDM software to lock the device down to prevent future updates prior to compatibility testing (be sure to test thoroughly).
You can upgrade to the latest supported version of the mobile application (Mobile Edge V15.4) which doesn’t experience this issue, the latest Maintenance Release for that is now V15.4.10.0.
Thanks,
Reid
